Brian Konopa started shooting as a plinker. Plinking refers to informal target shooting done at nonstandard targets and typically away from a formal range. His shooting skills have improved due to training, practice and advice of several instructors. This background is often a benefit to students and works to their advantage. The majority of students have a similar background which allows Brian to relate to their experience while being able to demonstrate the steps to correct bad habits and improve results. Most of the times in class, what might appear at first to be a trick question to the students, often becomes a sharing of a similar misconception that has been exposed and corrected through formal training.
Brian is also a fan of GLOCKS. "What I really like about the product line is that once you know how to take down (disassemble) one model for cleaning, you know how to take down every model they make. From a concealed carry point-of-view, I also like the fact that when dealing with models of the same caliber, a magazine from a larger model will fit in any smaller model also." Look for Brian to join the GLOCK Sport Shooting Foundation and post updates to competition results.
Brian is a 2nd Amendment supporter and a concealed carry advocate/instructor/practitioner. He is certified to instruct concealed carry for the states of Illinois and Utah. In addition to admiring most of the quotes by Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers in regards to the 2nd Amendment, he has a couple other favorite quotes from modern times. These are "Making good people helpless won't make bad people harmless." and "Lawful violence must sometimes be employed to deter and stop criminal violence." Utah Sheriffs' Association
Among Brian's other related accomplishments are NRA Lifetime Member, NRA Chief Range Safety Officer, and NRA Certified Instructor with certification in the disciplines of Basic Pistol Shooting, Basic Rifle Shooting, Personal Protection in the Home, and Personal Protection Outside the Home. Brian has also obtained the rating of Distinguished Expert for the Pistol discipline in the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program.
Brian attended his first IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Shooting) competition on February 16, 2014. The event was held at a local indoor range. Brian's results were 12th out of 23 for the overall and 5th out of 12 for his division (SSP - Stock Service Pistol) using a Glock 17.
